Dementia Care

Is a care setting right for my loved one with dementia?

Dementia is becoming more prevalent as time goes on in our communities. Adult Family Homes have the training and specialties to work with seniors facing dementia. The objective is to be a bridge between the resident and their family, knowing that they are not the same person they once were but still honoring them for who they are when daily care is performed.

Family members often feel drained from caregiving or at a loss for what is the best decision for their mom, dad, or grandparent. Adult Family Homes understand the difficulties families face and want to assist and partner in caring for your loved one at this stage of care in their lives. This can be accomplished through love and understanding of each individualized family and their particular needs.

Residents should be given great compassion and flexibility which is required as the disease progresses. Caregivers should be well trained and licensed by the State of Washington to oversee each new day and the difficult situations they might find themselves in with the resident. Care plans are written and constructed in such a way as to be able to communicate care between the medical personnel and the resident in need each and every day.

The goal is to promote a home-like environment to help residents feel more comfortable while receiving medical care. Medical needs can be met in Adult Family Homes with on-call Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses, blood work, X-rays, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy are all possibilities in Adult Family Homes. Many medical treatments are therefore able to be performed many times with the residents staying in their comfortable living environment. This can often exclude the need to be taken to another location for actual care processes.

In Adult Family Homes the ultimate desire is for the family, POA or Guardian to be able to enjoy their personal lives knowing that the resident they have placed in care is well loved, has good body hygiene, fed fresh and home cooked meals and solid medication management at whatever level their personal care requires.(*)

(*) Adult Family Homes vary in the care and living environments they offer to potential residents. It is imperative families looking for care give realistic expectations to the Placement Advisor in order to locate the home the family feels best fits the care they are looking for.
